Meet Our Cows

The Cow in Sanatana Dharma

In the Vedic tradition, the cow is honoured as Gau Mata - the universal mother.

She represents:

  • life that nourishes without harm
  • a natural balance between humans and the earth
  • a reminder that existence can be rooted in motherly care and giving

In Hindu scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Shreemad Bhagavatam, the protection of cows is described as part of a dharmic society, a society that lives in harmony with nature and recognises the sacredness of all life.

The cow is also connected to the Divine Mother. Mother Kamadhenu, the divine cow, represents the sustaining power of creation itself, the source through which nourishment, support and life flow into the world.

Krishna and the Cows

The relationship between Krishna and the cows is a deep expression of divine love.

Krishna is known as:

  • Gopala - the protector of cows
  • Govinda - the one who brings joy to cows

On the sacred day of Gopashtami, Krishna took on the responsibility of caring for cows. This moment represents the acceptance of responsibility for protecting life and the natural world.

It is said that Krishna knew each cow by name. If one wandered away, he would call her back. His connection was direct, personal, and full of awareness.

He walked barefoot through the land of Vraj, applied the sacred dust from beneath the cows’ feet, and lived among them.

This way of life reflects a deeper truth:

that humans are not separate from nature and that care is a form of devotion.

Gau Seva - Living Spiritual Practice

Caring for cows is known as Gau Seva - service to cows.

It is a direct expression of devotion.

To care for a cow is to:

  • protect life
  • honour creation
  • recognise Bhagavan in another being

In the Vaishnava understanding, Bhagavan resides in every heart.

Service to any living being becomes service to Him.

Ahimsa becomes real through action:

through how we live, how we choose, and how we relate to the world around us.

The Importance of the Cow in Today’s World

Beyond spiritual understanding, the cow plays an important role in natural ecosystems.

Through grazing, cows support soil regeneration, biodiversity, and natural nutrient cycles. Their presence helps maintain healthy landscapes and balance within the environment.

This reflects a deeper truth:

in nature, life exists in relationship.

When allowed to live naturally, the cow becomes part of a system that sustains the earth.

Cow Moments

Quiet days of companionship, attentive care, and freedom in the meadows at Śuka.

Krishna’s love for cows wasn’t just an expression of affection but a reminder of the importance of living in harmony with nature. His actions inspire devotees to practice Gau Seva (cow service), emphasising kindness, care and protection for animals.
